Early in his career he discovered a bit of woody herb in the Blue Mountains, which 20 years later was named Alania in his honour. Bank's French counterpart was in all probability Jean-Baptiste Louis-Claude-Theodore Leschenault de la Tour, who spent three years as a botanist to a scientific expedition which started in 1800.
